Students Dive Into New Culinary Adventures With Mussel Tasting
Students stepped out of their comfort zones this week to explore new flavours, as part of our ongoing efforts to encourage curiosity, cultural awareness, and healthy eating habits. The spotlight of this week’s tasting was mussels.
Students had the opportunity to sample freshly prepared mussels, a nutritious seafood dish that was unfamiliar to many of them. For some, it was their very first time trying shellfish.
“We want our students to be open-minded and adventurous in all aspects of life including food,” said Principal, Belle Thomas “Food is a great way to introduce young people to different cultures and broaden their understanding of the world.”

The mussel tasting sparked excitement and a bit of nervous laughter across the lunch tables. Some students were initially hesitant but gave it a try and many were surprised by how much they enjoyed the experience.
“I didn’t think I’d like it, but it was actually really good,” said one student. “I’m glad I tried it.”
Introducing students to new foods is part of a wider push at Unified Academy to promote confidence, independence, and a sense of exploration, it also provides valuable lessons in respect, resilience, and being open to difference whether it’s in a dish or a conversation.
We’re proud of our students for being brave and giving it a go, the mussel tasting was just the beginning – more food discovery events are planned for next term.
