As part of our school drive to develop a whole school approach to teaching students to read, this term we will be introducing the Accelerated Reader programme. The programme aims to motivate students to read through matching students with books and articles aligned to their unique interests and reading level, recognising student achievements and monitoring progress.
Accelerated Reader is a computer program aimed at encouraging a love of reading. Students pick a book at their own level and read it at their own pace. When finished, each student takes a short quiz on the computer. Students can read school books of their choice or online texts provided through our new digital library ‘myON’ which allows access to more than 6,000 enhanced digital books. Titles are dynamically matched to each individual student’s interests and also include age-appropriate digital news articles for students, reporting on timely topics and current events. Alongside this programme, students will also take regular STAR reading assessments to provide the information needed to ensure that students reach high levels of literacy.
