Maths

Our ambitious mathematics curriculum not only seeks to provide our students with the skills that they need for school, but also to enhance their life skills and to prepare them for the next stage of their education, training or work. We seek to challenge and extend all our students, including the most able, to achieve worthwhile accreditation to support their futures.

Our programme of work is planned to build on the stepping stones within each area of study. Students can access our curriculum at the best stage for them rather than on an age basis. They revisit the topics regularly and build on earlier learning so that by the end of Yr11, they understand and apply the ideas and skills to the best of their ability. A range of pathways allows our students to access mathematical knowledge at the levels most suited to their needs. Regular and varied assessments ensure that students achieve as well as they can for their given stage.

Our staff concentrate not only on knowledge and skills but also on finding the best approaches for teaching mathematics to our students. The use of problem-solving projects related to real life activities helps our students to engage with mathematics. We aim to develop our students’ creativity, resourcefulness and resilience through their day-to-day mathematical activities.

In Year 11, students will have the opportunity to gain either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification in mathematics.
