At Unified Academy, Food and Nutrition enables students to develop awareness of the made and natural environment and the social contexts into which food technology plays an important role. Food Technology aims to foster curiosity, ingenuity and imagination through personal involvement with nutritional concepts and ingredients. It also strives to increase pupils understanding of the physical, social, emotional, cultural needs of the individual, which changes throughout the stages of their life.
Students have opportunities to plan, prepare and create products that fulfil a wide variety of culinary requirements that meet the needs of individual students. In the Food and Nutrition learning environment staff insist upon high standards of health and safety, personal hygiene, food hygiene practices and following clear instructions to create as near as possible a working kitchen. The students respect rules associated with “the trade” and recognise that their behaviours need to be professional and acknowledging of boundaries. Within the environment all students and staff work well together as a team to achieve positive outcomes.
At KS4, students have the option of studying for GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition.
