Unified Academy has created a vocational skills learning environment to enable our students to gain valuable experience and develop skills, knowledge and attitudes in readiness for the world of work. The range of real work skills offered will prepare them for life beyond school, potentially in employment within the construction sector. Students will learn about: health and safety; tool safety; control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) regulations; and more general guidance on staying safe while working in the sector. They will practise and develop skills and knowledge in four recognised trades: wall and floor tiling, plastering, painting and decorating, and trowel trades. The students will develop their numeracy and literacy whilst learning how to plan jobs such as building a brick wall, painting walls and ceilings, plastering a wall and tiling. Students will develop a positive attitude towards safe working and the protocols required to work on a building project. Staff hold extremely high expectations for all students; they expect students to follow instructions closely and to work within industry tolerances. Students will take part in theory and practical lessons so that they can achieve positive outcomes and progress to further learning beyond school. Students will gather evidence to support achieving a Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills.
